On Weed and ADHD

Maya used to swear by weed to bring her into a calmer mental state before bed, or even before lunch some days. Anant gave it to her. She claimed it was to help her focus, but I knew it was an excuse to just to get high to satisfy her addiction. She received her ADHD diagnosis before she discarded me, and I never got to see her on her long-awaited medication, but have no doubt she would continue to do weed at the expense of Anant’s wallet. But I looked into if there was any truth behind her claims that it helped her to focus.


People with ADHD report using cannabis to “focus”, but what it is doing is quite different from what approved medications do, and the effects are highly variable. Stimulant medications such as methylphenidate or amphetamines primarily increase dopamine and noradrenaline signalling in specific frontal–striatal networks. These networks support executive functions: task initiation, sustained attention, working memory, and impulse control. In ADHD, baseline signalling in these circuits is often low or noisy. Stimulants raise the signal-to-noise ratio, which is why they can make thinking feel clearer, faster, and more directed rather than sedating.

Cannabis works through the endocannabinoid system, mainly via CB1 receptors that are widely distributed across the brain. THC does not selectively enhance executive networks. Instead, it broadly modulates neural firing, often reducing excitatory activity and altering how salience is assigned to thoughts and sensations. This reduces internal restlessness, emotional reactivity, or anxiety. When the main difficulty is mental agitation rather than attention itself, that calming effect can be misinterpreted as “better focus.” In other words, cannabis may reduce distress or hyperarousal rather than improving attention control.

Cannabis is paradoxical in its subjective effects, so neurotypicals feel more cerebral, more distracted, slower, and less task-focused. That fits well with what we know experimentally. THC tends to impair working memory, processing speed, and sustained attention. It can also increase associative thinking, which feels rich and reflective but fragments goal-directed focus. Saying “I feel mentally busy” while actually being less able to hold a task in mind and move efficiently from intention to action is a mismatch between subjective experience and cognitive performance rather than a contradiction.

Despite the uptake, clinically, the evidence does not support cannabis as a treatment for ADHD core symptoms. At best, it may help some people to relax.
